Small brown crock

Crock is vintage old brown, 4 inch diameter, 5.5 inches tall. It is in good shape, has pitting marks on the outside surface which were covered with the original glaze. As the picture shows, it has a dominant B mark on the bottom. Not sure if it should have a lid. Trying to find out the maker and what it was used for. Thank you for your help.
