Cut-Away Gasoline Engine Teaching Aid

Posted is a school teaching aid that was used to help students understand the operation and understanding of the four cycle gasoline engine. It is hand cranked through the four cycles, "intake... compression... power... and .... exhaust".
The intake valve is an atmospheric valve, meaning, the valve is sucked open by the intake or backwards motion of the piston. This results in the gasoline mixture is drawn into the combustion chamber. The exhaust valve is pushed open at the point that the piston goes forward during the exhaust stroke. This clears out and exhaust gasses from the chamber. If you hook a six volt dry cell to the little lamp in the cut-away engine head, you will see the lamp momentarily light up than go out as the piston passes the power stroke. This is a great early scientific training tool that helped folks understand the functions of the new fangled contraption that we call an internal combustion engine.
