I have just received this from my grandmother, she added a chain for me! And although I already find it very charming and dear to me I cannot find out what the characters are so I've no clue what its original significance is.
These are Japanese, with the black mat enamel background, the symbols are Asian, and represent Longevity on one side (SHOU), and Happiness/Good Fortune on the other (FU). Good omens, for you to wear.
