This intriguing article from 1923 describes how children would convert a high riding tricycle into a low riding racer by simply flipping the frame upside down. This design foreshadowed the cheap plastic Big Wheel popularized in the 1970’s by inventor Ray Lohr who was employed by Louis Marx and Company. The article from Illustrated World reveals that Ray was not the first person to come up with the idea. According to the story converting tricycles was a common practice in the 1920s, suggesting that Ray Lohr was simply the first person to successfully mass market the concept commercially.
