Hung on the wall by the door of an 18th century tavern . The tavern patron could use a clay pipe and one charge of tobacco as compliments of the tavern owner. Also next to the tobacco box was this tool. It is called an Ember Tong. With it, you could clean the pipe stem, tamp the tobacco in the pipe, and pick up a piece of coal embers with the heart shaped end to light your pipe.... hotairfan.
PS. every patron used the same selection of pipes. The patron would break off a small section of the clay pipe stem to make it more sanitary. This is why so many clay pipes of the day are found with short of no stems.

Great find. We find many old clay pipes here but never heard of or seem such a thing.
