WWII P-44 USMC H.B.T. combat fatigue jacket variant buttons = WTF??

Just picked up this nice USMC P-44 H.B.T. combat fatigue jacket. "Buy it now" for $25 bucks....couldn't pass it up. All original, NICE U.S.M.C. pocket stamp. A few tar/oil stains, nice large size, and overall will make a nice display. My WTF moment came when I took a closer look at the buttons. Expecting to see the typical U.S.M.C. "doughnut" buttons, I was confused when I saw the stars & wreath buttons....Doing some quick on line research, I am finding these type of buttons on BOTH Army AND Navy/Marine HBT jackets.....
If any one has any info on this, I would appreciate it.....is this perhaps Australian made????
