This is some type of hitch, I think. It has a very small hitch opening and when the mules legs are released they kick up and the hitch is released.

Hi longm, your bank "I Always Did 'Spise A Mule" was patented in 1897 and designed by James H. Bowen of Philly PA and manufactured by the J & E Stevens Co. of Cromwell, CT. With 50% paint and all the parts it's worth around $500. There is supposed to be a black boy seated on a bench behind the mule , you place a coin in the slot under the seated boy press the knob and the mule kicks around and knocks the boy over as the coin is deposited into the bank. We've been collecting banks for several years and actually have a couple of these. I got this info for you from our mechanical bank reference book. I hope this helps.
