French inventor, Captain Delacroix, created a bicycle sprocket that was elliptical shaped instead of round in 1906. The pedaling efficiency is achieved by reducing gearing in the ‘dead spot’ of the pedal revolution and increasing it at the point of maximum force. This innovation enables the rider to climb hills more easily and with less fatigue, and thus it has special advantages in hilly terrain.
