They call these "first day covers". I'm in Sydney Australia. Captain Cook is the one given the dubious title of Discoverer of Australia. But he did some travelling around the Pacific in three major voyages. You'll see a map of his three voyages here:

On his third voyage you'll see he was the first European to visit the Hawaiian islands. The Cook Landing Site in Waimea on Kaua?i island in Hawaii, is where Captain James Cook landed at the mouth of the Waimea River on January 20, 1778.
Therefore the first day cover two hundred years later.
He later headed north to Oregon, to Nootka Sound and further on to Cook inlet in Alaska. This first day cover recognizes his visit to Alaska linking it to the event on january 20 as part of Cook's third and last voyage. Read on to learn about his death just over a year later.
